Uxmal is a Maya ruin in Yucatán , Mexico , 80 kilometers south of Merida. Probably the name Uxmal means (pronounced Usjmaal ) "thrice built", but that is not quite sure.
Uxmal was around the year 500 by Their Uitzil Chac Tutul Xiu founded. The power remained for centuries in the hands of the Xiu family. The major part of the city was between 700 and 1000 built. Lived there at the height of about 25,000 people. Around 1200 the city lost its significance and the Xiu moved their capital to Maní . Descriptions of Spanish conquistadors suggest, however, that Uxmal in the 16th century was still inhabited.
